Lucy Fair Hagan

Lucy Bowie Fair Hagan died peacefully at Canterbury Court in Atlanta on May 23th at the age of 95. Born and brought up in Greenville SC in a close family whose love followed her and shaped her life, she was the daughter of Charles Hardy Fair MD and Annie Akers Fair. Her maternal grandfather, James Samuel Akers, was Ga. Tech’s first treasurer and a member of the Board of Trustees.

She graduated from Greenville High School at 16, attended Hollins College and graduated with a BA in music from Converse College. In the following years she was a recorded vocalist, earned a private pilot’s license and attended the University of South Carolina Law School. During the war she and her parents moved to Charleston, SC where her father was chief surgeon at the military hospital. Dr. Fair introduced her to Frank Hagan, a US Navy Lt (j.g.) from Monroe City, Missouri. When Frank received orders to the Pacific, having already completed a tour in North Africa, he proposed and the family organized a wedding with five days notice. The couple eventually moved to Atlanta in 1953, settling in Buckhead and raised a family.

Lucy’s greatest love was her adored husband and children, who in her eyes could do no wrong. Lucy had a life-long passion for opera and theater, for international travel, numerous collections, crafts and a love of good stories. She was a member of the Atlanta Junior League, the Argonne Foresters, the Investment Study Club and through her husband, the Piedmont Driving Club.

She is survived by Francis Paul Hagan (Mitzi) children Elizabeth (David) and Bowie, James Akers Hagan children Emily (Alex) and Paul (Jana), Norvin Charles Hagan children Kelly and Knox, Elizabeth Linehan children Frank, Will, Rose Fair and Leigh Anne, Rosa Laurin Ramsey (Buddy) children Jake, Hagan (Jenna), Walter and Matthew. She leaves five great grandchildren and beloved nieces, nephews and relatives.

She was predeceased by her parents and her two cherished sisters, Rosa Douglas and Elizabeth Wherry of Greenville, SC. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the Frank Hagan fund at Marist High School in Atlanta, Hollins College or your favorite charity.

There will be a Memorial Service for Lucy at 11:00 AM on Thursday June 8 at Northside United Methodist Church in Atlanta located at 2799 Northside Dr NW.
