Laverge Pope Austin

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Laverge Pope Austin, passed away on April 24, 2024, after a short illness. She was 71. She was born to the late Jerry and Thelma Pope, in Atlanta, Georgia on December 17^th, 1952. Laverge graduated from Murphy High School in 1968 and she attended Brenau University in Gainesville, Georgia. She was an avid walker and enjoyed doing anything outdoors. She loved reading and spending time with her grandsons her “boys”. Laverge worked as an elementary and middle school reading specialist and later retired as an executive assistant with the Dekalb County School District.

Laverge is survived by two children: Leslie P. Austin, of Atlanta, Georgia; Lenard L. Austin, of Rex, Georgia. She is also survived by her brother Colonel Pope, sister-in-law Mary Pope of Mountain Home, Idaho, two grandchildren, Damien E. Austin and Elijah M. Austin-Johnson, a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends.

Laverge was cremated at Cremation Society of Georgia and her ashes will be scattered later. The memorial service will be held on May 25^th, 2024, at 11:00am, at Emory Presbyterian Church, 1886 North Decatur Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30307.
