John Nemeth

January 16, 1935 — February 24, 2024

John Nemeth, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend lived to see his 89th birthday. Born in Hungary during WWII, he survived 3 wars. As a boy he engaged in courageous acts to help sustain his family. Whether it was throwing coal off a moving train to warm his apartment or collecting discarded Russian parachutes for his mother to knit into clothes, he was always a family man. In 1956 he fought as a Freedom Fighter when the Russians invaded Hungary. As the Russians defeated Hungary, he escaped under gunfire and found himself in a refugee camp in Austria. When presented with his possible asylum countries, he chose the US because he had always been an avid fan of Tarzan movies. The rest is history.

In 1958 he joined the US Army and was stationed in Wurzburg, Germany, where he met the love of his life, Annemarie. They were married and had their first child, Eva, in 1962. Five years later they welcomed their second child, Michelle. In those early years John spent two years on tour in Vietnam. He was greatly missed.

After a 7 year tour in Stuttgart, Germany the family returned home to the US, and he retired from the Army after 21 years. He started his second career in avionics in the private sector in Augusta, Georgia. He proudly watched his daughters graduate from college as a physician and physical therapist. In 1993 he welcomed his first son-in-law, Mike. Four years later his beloved granddaughter, Abby, was born, and he and Annemarie retired and moved to Atlanta to be her primary caretakers when Eva returned to work. In his retirement he enjoyed the time spent with Abby, caring for his garden, woodworking and spending quality time with friends and family. He was always up for a goulash party. In 2015 he welcomed his second son-in-law, Robert and helped send his beloved granddaughter Abby off to college. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Annemarie Nemeth, his daughter Eva Nemeth, her husband Michael Jones and their daughter Abby, and his daughter Michelle Nemeth and her husband Robert Morris.
