Mr. John Fuller Mynatt, Sr. was a caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend. He passed away suddenly on Monday, March 2, at the age of 83 at his home in Decatur, GA.
John was born on May 31, 1942, in Atlanta, Georgia where he spent most of his life. He attended E. Rivers Elementary School and North Fulton High School where he and his identical twin brother, James Mynatt, excelled as basketball stars on the court.
Following high school, John attended Mercer University in Macon, Georgia where he studied Economics and became a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was also enlisted in ROTC. It was here at Mercer that John met his wife, Becky. They married on August 1, 1965, and share over 60 years of marriage together.
After college, John was commissioned by the Army and stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri. In 1966, he was sent to serve as a Petroleum Officer in Vietnam for a year. Following his time in Vietnam, John served in the Reserves.
When John returned home, he went to work for First National Bank and returned to school at Georgia State University to earn his MBA. Later John joined Draper Owens Insurance Company with his brother, Clyde. They worked at Draper Owens Co. together for 34 years until the company merged with Metro-Atlanta Insurance Company in 2004. He continued with Metro-Atlanta until he fully retired in December of 2025.
John loved his family and his close friends. He hated instruction manuals. All his life he was a “Mr. Fix-it” and he passed on some of those traits to both John and LeeAnne. His twin brother was always his confidant, his best friend, and his co-conspirator. He was passionate about his family, his job, his Savior, his church, and a masterfully created sandwich. John loved working in the yard, especially in his beautiful flowerbeds. Like many others he had some real struggles in life. Most of his adult life he had an isolating deafness in one ear. Nevertheless, he worked hard and overcame these struggles and truly left a legacy of perseverance and courage for his family.
John was preceded in death by his mother and father, Clyde and Bazalyn Mynatt and his sister-in-law Cindy S. Mynatt.
He is survived by his wife, Becky G. Mynatt; his brothers Clyde Mynatt (Jackie) and James Mynatt; his son John F. Mynatt, Jr. (Amy); his daughter LeeAnne M. Dasher (Glen); his grandchildren Libby M. Fredericks (Ben); Luke Branton (Jessica); Jackson Branton; Emma Yawn (Josh); Ethan Dasher; Jacob Dasher; and Joshua Braun (Leslie); along with numerous nieces and nephews. John and Becky have been blessed with nine great grandchildren.
Services celebrating John’s life will be held at Oak Grove United Methodist Church at 2:00pm on Friday, March 6, followed by a reception in the Great Hall at Oak Grove UMC. Donations or memorial gifts can be made to:
