It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jay Clark Johnson, who passed away on June 17, 2026, at the age of 63.
Born on August 28, 1962, in Harvey, Illinois, Jay was the son of Eugene and Mary Anne (Rohde) Johnson, who preceded him in death. He was a devoted father, loyal friend, accomplished athlete, successful entrepreneur, and dedicated community leader whose warmth, humor, and generosity touched countless lives.
Jay graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1984, where he proudly competed as a Division I tennis player for the Eastern Illinois Panthers from 1980 through 1984. The discipline, sportsmanship, and lifelong friendships he developed during those years remained an important part of who he was.
Following graduation, Jay began his career with Continental Airlines, where he worked from 1985 until 2001. In 2017, he realized his dream of business ownership by starting Vulcan Engraving, which he proudly operated until health challenges led to his disability retirement in 2024.
Service to others was one of Jay's defining qualities. He served as Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Cherokee and was the former captain of the Harmony on the Lakes Tennis Team where he played alongside his son. Whether volunteering in his community, competing on the tennis court, or spending time with friends, Jay brought enthusiasm, leadership, and an unforgettable sense of humor.
Outside of work and community service, Jay found joy on the golf course, in the company of family and friends, and in sharing stories that could fill a room with laughter. His quick wit and remarkable storytelling made every gathering more memorable, and those who knew him will forever cherish the laughter and happiness he brought into their lives.
Jay is survived by his beloved son, Jay Johnson Jr.; his sister, Beth Federman; and his faithful Australian Shepherd service dog, Zeus. His family, friends, and all who knew him will deeply miss his kindness, resilience, and larger-than-life personality.
A private Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends to gather, share memories, and celebrate the remarkable life of a man who never met a stranger and whose laughter will continue to echo in the hearts of those he loved.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jay's memory to the American Diabetes Association through the Jay Clark Johnson Type 1 Diabetes Memorial campaign:

Jay's legacy of friendship, perseverance, generosity, and laughter will live on through the many lives he touched. He will be deeply loved, forever remembered, and greatly missed.
