Henry Gary Pannell

Henry “Gary” Pannell, 79, of Atlanta, GA died unexpectedly following a brief illness on September 4, 2016. Born in Tuscaloosa, AL he grew up on the Sweet Briar College campus near Amherst, VA. Gary graduated from Woodberry Forest School and Washington and Lee University. After serving two years in the US Army, he received the JD degree, University of Virginia School of Law and later an MBA from Georgia State University.

Brief work in a Lynchburg, VA bank led to his law career focus on banking and financial institutions. Work in the Washington, DC legal department for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency was followed by five years as an in-house attorney for Wachovia Bank in Winston-Salem, NC. He then returned to the OCC and served as Regional Counsel, then District Counsel for the Southeast District in Atlanta for the next 27 years. Following his retirement in 2000, he served as Special Counsel in the Atlanta office of Miller Hamilton Snider and Odom, then the Jones Walker law firm until his death. Since 2008 Gary has been an Independent Director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta. Active in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, he served as treasurer of the diocese as well as treasurer of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church Atlanta.

Gary is survived by his wife of 49 years Winnie; children, Andrew and Kate Charles; grandchildren Dylan and Piper; brother Clifton Pannell Sylvia; brothers-in law Jeb Pringle Pat and Lynn Pringle Laura and eight nieces and nephews. A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. September 28, 2016 at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, Atlanta, GA. 30327.
