George Thomas Varner, Sr.

George Thomas Varner Sr., 87, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away on August 22, 2026. He was born on October 27, 1938, in Pleasants County, West Virginia, to Joseph W. Varner and Harriet Johnston Varner.

Tom made Atlanta his home for most of his life. He attended North Fulton High School in Atlanta, where he met his first wife, Carol Vivian Russ. They married and had two children, George Thomas Varner Jr. and Vivian Varner Wilber. Following their divorce, Tom married Nancy Roper Miller, also of Atlanta.

Tom was a Certified Public Accountant and spent his career working in accounting and tax preparation. He earned his accounting degree from Auburn University; a school he remained passionately devoted to throughout his life. He was a Sigma Chi fraternity alumnus and remained very active as a mentor and chapter advisor to schools throughout the southeast. He was a huge Auburn fan and took great pride in supporting the Tigers. In addition to his accounting degree, Tom earned a law degree in Atlanta, reflecting his lifelong interest in business, taxation, and the law.

Tom was also a member of the Buckhead Boys in Atlanta, where he formed many lasting friendships and enjoyed the camaraderie of the group. His Atlanta roots, friendships, and connections remained an important part of his life.

Tom is survived by his children, George Thomas Varner Jr. and Vivian Varner Wilber and her husband, John Wilber, and by his grandchildren, Casey Fuller Varner, Joseph Thomas Wilber and his wife, Molly Kathleen Wilber, and Carol Elizabeth Stainton and her husband, Samuel Maxwell Stainton. When Tom married Nancy, he also became part of her family and is survived by his stepchildren, Chris Miller and his wife, Claire Chamberlain, and Craig Miller and his wife, Stephanie. Tom is also survived by Chris and Claire's son, Logan Miller, and daughter Mia Contino and Craig and his wife's son, Jackson Miller and daughter, Chloe Miller. Tom valued the relationships he shared with his family and was grateful for the love and companionship they brought to his life.

Tom is also survived by his sister, Esther Varner Lewis and her husband, Kim Lewis and many cherished nieces and nephews. His sister Joanne Bailey and her husband, Robert predeceased him.

Tom will be remembered for his intelligence, his strong personality, his love of Auburn, his career in accounting and tax, and the many friendships he developed throughout his life. Most of all, he will be remembered for the people he loved and the lasting relationships he formed with his family and friends.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His memory will live on through his children, grandchildren, stepchildren, sister, nieces and nephews, and the generations that follow.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
