George Steven Hogan

George Steven Hogan, 79, of Douglas County, Georgia, passed away on May 11, 2025. Born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, on October 16, 1945, George lived a life defined by duty, courage, and selfless service to others.

In 1969, George joined the United States Army to serve his country during the Vietnam War. He became a helicopter pilot, flying combat missions with extraordinary bravery and composure. His time in Vietnam left an enduring mark on those who served with him, and his dedication to his fellow soldiers never wavered.

After returning home, George continued his life of public service with the Fulton County Police Department. Over a distinguished career spanning more than 30 years, he rose to the rank of Deputy Chief, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community he served. He was known for his integrity, steady leadership, and dedication to justice.

Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, George once again answered the call of duty, rejoining the U.S. Army at the age of 60. Holding the rank of Warrant Officer 4 (W-4), he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he served with the 8-229th Aviation Regiment, known as the Flying Tigers. He was affectionately given the call sign “Yoda” for his wisdom, calm under pressure, and deep well of experience. His continued service at such a stage in life was a powerful example of his patriotism and courage.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara G. Hogan; and his children, Kelly Karen Hogan, Michael Patrick Hogan, Colin Casey Hogan, and Carla Jean Lee. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and loyal friend. Above all, he was a man of principle and quiet heroism.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to a veterans’ organization of your choice.

George Steven Hogan lived a life of honor, purpose, and deep patriotism. His legacy of leadership, service, and love will live on through all who had the privilege of knowing him.
