Gail Greene Johnson

Gail Greene Johnson, of Atlanta, died March 5, 2026 after a brief illness. She was 94 years old, and led a very full life. Her chief delights were family, friends, flowers, faith and music, and she remained engaged with these endeavors until the very end of her life. The day before she fell ill, she judged a flower competition. In the last week of her life, she shared meals with family and with friends.

Gail and her husband, Aubrey Robert Johnson, Jr., known to most as Bob, were born and raised in Atlanta. They met on a summer trip after Gail graduated from North Fulton High School, where she was active in the Special Choir. Gail attended the University of Georgia, where she studied vocal performance, and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. Gail and Bob married in 1952 after Bob was honorably discharged from the Marines. After completing college at the University of North Carolina, they lived in Rockingham and Laurinburg, North Carolina, and Spartanburg, South Carolina, before returning to Atlanta in 1966 with their children Janice, Kenneth and Mark. Gail and Bob maintained homes on St. Simons Island for many years, returning to Atlanta in 2016 to make their home at Canterbury Court, where she reconnected with childhood friends and made many new ones.

In the course of her life, Gail held volunteer leadership positions with the altar and flower guilds at the Cathedral of St. Philip, Christ Church Frederica on St. Simons Island, and the chapel at Canterbury Court. She was a member of the St. Veronica’s Guild at the Cathedral of St. Philip, and the Druid Hills Garden Club, for more than 50 years. She held state-level leadership positions with the Garden Club of Georgia. She was president of Canterbury Choristers at the time of her death. She attended concerts of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra her entire life. She became a passionate supporter of The Atlanta Opera as the company grew and thrived.

Gail is survived by her daughter Janice Landrum (Robert), of Sleepy Hollow, New York; her son Kenneth Johnson (Natalie), of New York City; grandchildren Charlotte Levitt (Alex), James Landrum (Sarah), Richard Johnson (Sarah), Andrew Johnson and Caroline Lalier (Darius); and four great grandchildren: Carter, Anthony, Sloane and Josephine. She was predeceased by her parents LaTrelle and Asbury Greene, her son Mark, and her husband of 66 years, Bob Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at the Cathedral of St. Philip on April 8, 2026 at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in her memory to The Atlanta Opera, https://www.atlantaopera.org/donate/.
