Gene Patrick Powers was “raised right” in an Irish-Catholic community in Savannah, Georgia. He was a gifted social worker and exuberant university professor, touching the lives of anyone he encountered, and he instilled these kind, nurturing qualities in every student he taught.
Gene lived and worked in Northern Ireland for sixteen years, where he raised his three children, Hannah, Rory, and Colin. He also started the Portstewart Eagles, one of Northern Irelands first Little League Baseball teams, which he coached for many years, whilst also helplessly trying to dodge the rain.
Having spent the last eight years of his life in Rome, Georgia, Gene taught at Dalton State College, wrote novels and poetry, and rode his motorcycle “Big Red” every chance he could get. Gene became “Pappy Monk” to his first grandchild, Henry Arthur Taylor in 2019, for which he heroically rode across the country from Rome, GA to Los Angeles, CA to be there the day Henry was born.
Impressively, with how busy he kept himself, Gene authored 10 novels, and carved out a unique genre of literature. He is the author of seven books in the series ‘An American-Irish-Philosophical-Romance-Murder Mystery ” and three in ‘The Adventures of Sid: A Ninja-Buddhist Detective.’
Sadly, Gene Powers passed away on the 10th of July, 2020, but his legacy lives on in his children, grandchild, his family, his friends, and in his numerous published works. Gene was a wonderful father, pappy, and brother. He was a great man who feared little, and he was always there for those around him, be them known or strangers. He will be missed by all that knew him, and his bright spirit and love of life will live on in those who had the sincere pleasure of his company.
A gathering to celebrate Gene’s life will be held at a future date.
