Edith Martin Smith

Edith M. Smith, 82 of Atlanta passed away after an extended illness on December 5, 2018.
Edith, a sixth generation Atlantan, was born in 1936 in Atlanta to her late parents D.O. and
Frances Martin. She is survived by her husband Gilly, her beloved husband for almost 62 years,
three wonderful children and four exceptional grandchildren. Their wedding took place at the
Cathedral of St. Philips on December 27, 1957. For 41 years Edith was a much-loved preschool
teacher of two and three year-olds at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church Day School. Often she is
approached by her now adult students thanking her for the many fun days at her school. She
and Gilly’s three children are Trav, Leigh, and Jennifer. Leigh Smith’s children are Nicholas, 24,
and Erin Catherall, 20. Jennifer and Jonathan Schuh’s children are Eliza, 19, and Gillian, 17. Edith
has spent many happy times with each and all family members, especially the grandchildren.
It’s hard to capture Edith’s great spirit in words as she has meant so much to so many. In short,
she will be greatly missed and will not be forgotten.

A memorial service will be held at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 15, at
2:00pm.
