Christine Stamps Boteler, a longtime resident of Sandy Springs, passed away peacefully Monday, September 28th just shy of her 97th birthday from complications of dementia. Christine was born October 19, 1918 in Carroll County, Georgia to George C and Lillie Duncan Stamps. She grew up on her family’s Carroll County farm with her nine siblings and in her later years loved arguing with her sister over who picked the most cotton in a day. She finished her schooling at the Toccoa Falls Institute in 1942 then moved to Atlanta to work for the federal government in support of the war effort. After the war, she worked as an executive secretary at Rich’s before stepping down to raise her 2 children.
Christine loved recalling her two years living in Afghanistan with her family in the 1960s. Her adventures during that time included driving over the Khyber Pass to Delhi and traveling to the Soviet Union and through 15 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. For 72 years she was a member of Atlanta First Methodist church where she met her husband, Winston, and was an active member of the MACO Sunday school class where she made treasured lifelong friendships. Many Atlanta organizations benefitted from her tireless volunteering including the Riverwood High School PTA, The American Cancer Society, the Atlanta Symphony Guild, Heritage Sandy Springs, the Georgia Tech Faculty Wives Club, of which she was a past president, and the Dorothea Benson Senior Center.
Christine was a three time cancer survivor and a wonder of energy and determination, mowing her hilly lawn, lifting weights and walking 3 miles daily on a treadmill well into her 90s. Always colorfully fashionable, she delighted in telling her age in later years, giving 92 going on 80 a whole new cachet.
She was the last surviving of ten siblings: Manor, Dewey, Cecil, Paul, Clifford, Mabel, Ollie Maude, Jewell and Louise. Christine will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Winston, her children, Kevin Cheryl and Diane Bill Miller, her three grandchildren, Carrie Spencer Dungan, Mary Mullen Boteler and Currie Boteler, as well as nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. Christine was a remarkable, strong Southern woman. We will miss her.
Her family thanks Lillia Sargent, Sue Hamilton and all the wonderfully caring staff at Elmcroft of Roswell, as well as her dear, amazing care manager, Linda Brown, who brought happiness and comfort to her last years.
In lieu of flower donations may be given to The Friends of the Dorothy Benson Senior Center, 6500 Vernon Woods Dr. NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328, or to Atlanta First Methodist Church 360 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA, 30308.
The family plans a memorial service at a later time.
