Born Catherine Ellen Coughlin in Highland Park, Michigan. Died peacefully in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, August 9, 2020.
Cathie was raised in Detroit, Michigan. She attended Gesu Catholic Grade School, St. Theresa High School and was a graduate of Marygrove College with a degree in Mathematics. She became a buyer at Kern’s Department Store in Detroit. This is where Cathie developed her sense of style. She was a fashionable dresser. She loved finely made clothes, shoes and especially purses that matched her outfits. She had impeccable taste. Always dressed “to the nines” – head to toe. A fashionista!
Cathie put her career aside to become a wife, mother and homemaker. She raised five children in the same Detroit neighborhood where she grew up.
Cathie joined the Christ Child Society of Detroit, was a lifetime member, board member, chairman of numerous events and President from 1965-1967. Her projects included founding the Christ Child School, working at Boys Hope and the Christ Child House.
Cathie was a devout Catholic and had a great love for our Blessed Mother. She recited the rosary daily and was very passionate about her faith. It sustained her throughout the days of her life. She was a member of Christ the King parish in Atlanta.
Cathie was a voracious reader, loved gardening, and was an avid and skilled bridge player. She never tired of a game and played weekly. We are sure she’s joined her friends at the bridge table in heaven!
Cathie was very strong willed and lived independently until her death! As her grandson, John Moravek shared “she was loving but would put you in your place”. Forever 29!!
Cathie is survived by her five children, Karen Girardy (Jim), Kris Moravek (Jim), John (David Phillips), Jim (Patti), and Jerry; her eight grandchildren, John Girardy, Mark Girardy, Jim Moravek Jr (Molly), John Moravek (Angie), Kathryn Weiland (Patrick), Katelyn Riebesehl (Mike), Jennifer de Groot (Joseph), and Patrick Anhut. Also survived by her five great-grandchildren, Mark Girardy, Jack Moravek, Henry Moravek, Caroline Moravek and Grace Weiland. She was looking forward to welcoming her fourth great-grandson in October.
Cathie was preceded in death by her parents, Genevieve and Frank Coughlin, her brother James Coughlin, and great-granddaughter Makayla Weiland.
Cathie’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, especially Dr. Joshua Jackson, for the care shown to our mother. Thank you to the staff at Lenbrook, Atlanta, for the kindnesses shown to mom.
The Mass will be on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, MI 48009.
