Billy Howell Hargett

Billy Howell Hargett, age 92, passed away peacefully at his home in Peachtree City on Friday, January 1, 2021. He was born during the depression in his granddaddy’s home in the Whitesville Community of Harris County Georgia to Myrtice Howell and Edwin Starr Hargett. He attended North Georgia College from 1945-47 and transferred to the University of Georgia, was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, and graduated in 1949 with a BBA in accounting. He participated in the ROTC program at UGA and received a commission of 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves. After graduation, he was employed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta as a note clerk. While working at the Fed, he was called to active duty and served as a rifle platoon leader with the 25th Infantry Division during the Korean War in 1952. On returning from Korea, he married Eleanor Rosa Mehaffey in July 1953. After serving thirty-eight years with the Fed, he retired at the age of 59 as Executive Vice President and third in charge of the Sixth Federal Reserve District. He and Eleanor were long time members of the Briarcliff UMC and the Druid Hills CC. Billy was a dedicated family man who, side by side with Eleanor, provided a loving home to their four daughters, offered limitless guidance and support, and would consider his family his greatest achievement. He never lost his mental sharpness or great sense of humor. He is preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Ed Hargett. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Eleanor, his four daughters; Linda (Tony) DaSilva of Peachtree City, Susan (Steve) McElhannon of Woodstock, Betty Gilcrease of Tucker, and Cindy (Jimmy) Clancy of Alpharetta, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
