Bernard John Maloney

Bernard John Maloney passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025 after a long battle with dementia. John was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, but his family soon moved to Warner Robins, Georgia where he spent his childhood. At seventeen, he moved to Atlanta to attend Georgia Tech, and stayed nearby, in Sandy Springs, for the rest of his life. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management from Tech and his MBA from Georgia State University.

While at Tech, John met Sandi Aptaker on a blind date, and it was a perfect match. Happily married for 51 years, they both loved books, theater, music, and dancing. She was truly the love of his life. Together they had one daughter, Heather, whom he adored.

John greeted everyone with a smile, often a goofy grin. He had the ability to put people at ease with his kind, generous personality. He was incredibly bright and quick witted, and he loved puns. His sense of humor was famous, or perhaps infamous. He took delight in getting people to laugh, or more often, roll their eyes, at his jokes.

John loved his family more than anything. He, along with his wife, regularly attended plays, concerts, events, etc. for not only his own daughter and grandchildren, but also nieces and nephews. His friends and family would seek his counsel because of his uncanny ability to help you figure out the best decision for yourself.

John made everyone he met, and everything he touched, better.

His nephew, Travis, summed him up perfectly: “(He) was truly one-of-a-kind; so intelligent, wise, kind and deeply, willfully goofy.” John was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend, who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Sandi Maloney, and is survived by his daughter, Heather (Edward) Robertson; his grandchildren, James and Sean Robertson; his sister, Susan Muha; his sisters-in-law, Ruth Anne Ekmark and Teresa Maloney; and his nephews and nieces, Travis Ekmark, Kevin (Andrea) Ekmark, and Shannon Maloney.

The family will hold a memorial service at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, March 22nd at 2:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta or St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church.
