Al Newell, 74, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at his home in Buford, GA. Al was born in Savannah, GA on January 15, 1947 to Alfred C. Newell, Sr. and Mary Carolyn Adams.
Al grew up in Savannah, GA. and graduated from Savannah High School in 1965.
Al married Linda Nicholson in 1970 in Blue Ridge, GA. They were married for 50 years.
Al moved to Atlanta, GA in 1966 where he worked for Southern Bell. Years later he pursued a career in law enforcement that lasted for over a decade, before returning to the phone company from where he retired in 2004. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with family.
Al Newell is survived by his spouse, Linda Newell, of Buford, GA; his daughters: Alison Horne (Kenneth) of Buford, GA and Ashley Pendleton (Adam) of Cumming, GA; his grandchildren: Taylor, Kennedy and Madison Horne, of Buford GA; Jordan, Ella and Jaden Thomas of Cumming, GA; his brothers: Carl Newell and Robert Newell (Betty) of Savannah, GA. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred C. Newell, Sr. and Mary Carolyn Adams.
Growing up in Savannah, Al rarely missed the city’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and continued this tradition with his own family. His favorite part of the parade was watching the vintage cars. Al was a skilled pianist and also enjoyed playing his pipe organ. He was honored to be asked to play the organ for a couple of churches he attended though the years. When his family was young, they spent a lot of Sundays after church hiking Stone Mountain. It became one of the family’s favorite traditions.
Al loved watching airplanes and spent a lot of time with his family watching planes come and go at Peachtree Dekalb Airport. He loved sharing this pastime with his grandchildren when they were young. He also enjoyed watching his daughters play softball and even coached them a couple of seasons; and years later, you could find him watching his grandchildren play their own sports.
His family is thankful for the outpouring of love and support during this time. Al was one of a kind and is truly missed.
