Taylor Bright Lewis, Jr.
Taylor Bright Lewis, Jr. of Birmingham and Atlanta passed away July 28, 2011 at the age of 92. He passed at his Atlanta home, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 12 years Dorothy H. Lewis, his daughters Leila R. Smith and Nancy L. Joe Goldstein, his grandchildren Leila E. Goldstein and Anderson D. Smith, his three siblings Mary Francis Etheridge, James Lewis, and Edward Lewis, and many nieces and nephews. Taylor is also survived by a loving step Family: Jan Alan Stewart, Chuck Dina Harvey, grandchildren Ashley, Matt, Megan, Jessica, Emily, and Hannah, and four step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving first wife of 53 years, Helen Louise Long Lewis, his grandson Jay Lewis Goldstein, and his stepson Gil Harvey.
Taylor was born August 8, 1919 in Birmingham, Alabama to parents, Taylor B. Lewis, Sr. and Agnes Craiger Lewis. He joined the U.S. army in 1938 and fought in the Pacific during WWII. At the age of 25 he led a company of men in the Philippines. He re-enlisted after the war, then joined the reserves and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1973.
In 1947, Taylor graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Mining Engineering. With his brothers he began a building construction business in Birmingham, then in 1963 he moved to Atlanta where he graduated law school and worked as a Fulton County attorney until retirement. During his retirement years, he loved to read and to travel the world. Taylor Lewis was a loving husband, father and grandfather who never stopped giving to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Services with full military honors held August 3rd at 2:30, Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. in lieu of flowers, please donate to Parkinson’s research.
