Dr. Roy Forbes, 77, son of Oravel and Roy H. Forbes Sr. of Washington, NC, passed away December 1, 2011 surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his sister Anne Downs; his three daughters, Julie, Lori, and Jan; his six grandchildren; and many close friends. Roy was a man of personal and professional integrity whose passionate work in educational research and development made a difference in many lives. His many and varied contributions in the field included appointments as the Director of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, Advisor to NC Governor Jim Hunt, and founding Executive Director of SERVE the southeast’s regional education research and development laboratory. After retiring as a professor at the University of NC at Greensboro, he continued working as an educational consultant. At the time of his passing, Roy was the Director of the Evaluation Center, University of West Georgia. He was a kind-hearted, compassionate, and loving man, and all who had the privilege to know him will miss him dearly. A memorial service will be held in January to celebrate his life.

    I worked with Roy at the Georgia Department of Education. I enjoyed getting to know him and working with and for him. He was an outstanding educator, a friend, and a kind, considerate gentleman. His passing is a loss to not only family and friends but to the field education.
