Francis Nigel Richardson

October 26, 1938 — November 17, 2018

Francis Nigel Richardson 1938-2018. Dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle died November 17, 2018 at his home in Atlanta after a courageous battle with cancer.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, December 14, 2018 at 2 p.m. at The Cathedral of Saint Philip, 2744 Peachtree Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30305.
Nigel was born in Ewell, Surrey, England on October 26, 1938. He graduated from Durham University in 1960 and married his wife Clare in 1961. They lived in England until 1968 when they emigrated to the United States.
Nigel is survived by his wife Clare of Atlanta, son Mark of Paris, France, daughter Ruth Richardson and husband Kevin Gaw of Cumberland, Rhode Island, daughter Paula Richardson and husband Eric Edwards of Tryon, North Carolina and son John Richardson and wife Andrea Nay Richardson of East Point, Georgia. Grandchildren Laura Richardson, Stephanie Richardson, David Richardson, Sara McCown and Kate Richardson. Nigel is also survived by his brother Simon Richardson of Lesbury, England, and his sister Penelope France of Sandy Springs, Georgia and many other nieces and nephews who knew and loved him.
After emigrating to The United States in 1968, Nigel and Clare lived in several States before leaving on an assignment to live in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. They returned to the USA in 1971 and settled in Atlanta.
Nigel was an active member of the Atlanta community. His involvement included membership on the boards of the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta, Alliance Francaise d’Atlanta and St. Philip’s Friends of Cathedral Music. Nigel was very active throughout his life and loved to swim as often as possible. He also loved languages, especially German and French. His greatest pleasures came from conversations with family and friends in a relaxed setting. He had the ability to create a real bond with people by encouraging them to talk about their interests as well as his own. Whether socially or for the causes he espoused, he gave of his time and experience with enthusiasm and pleasure. He was devoted to a plant-based diet and would often try to convert others to veganism both for personal health and the health of the planet.
He will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him.
