ELIZABETH COLLEY SHELTON of Atlanta passed away on August 2, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Charles Bascom Shelton, Jr., who died in 1990. She was born March 20, 1920 in Atlanta to John Edmonds Colley and Bess Hollowell Colley. She attended Washington Seminary in Atlanta and Sweet Briar College. She received her BA in Sociology from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga and did postgraduate work at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. She was a caseworker with Hamilton County Family Services in Chattanooga and, upon returning to Atlanta, was employed by the Fulton County Department of Family and Children’s Services from 1976 – 1998. For the last fourteen years of her life she was a resident of Canterbury Court in Atlanta. She was a member of the Cathedral of St. Philip, the Junior League of Atlanta, the Piedmont Driving Club and the Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross. She was a graduate of Education for Ministry, a four-year course of study. She was active in the Episcopal Church for many years, serving on the Altar Guild, Episcopal Church Women, Daughters of the King and as a Sunday school teacher. She served on the Board of Directors of the Midtown Assistance Center, the Memorial Georgia Conference on Social Welfare and was a member of the Georgia County Welfare Association. She is survived by two sons, Charles Bascom Shelton III of Atlanta and Rosser Edmonds Shelton of Athens and a daughter, Colley Shelton Case of Blairsville. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Lara Ratcliff Shelton of Atlanta, Ashley Shelton Gayanilo of Stratford, Connecticut, John Edmonds Case of Seattle, Washington and James Alexander Case of Asheville, NC and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at St. Philip’s Cathedral on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 2:00 PM followed by interment in the Cathedral Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends in the Gould Room at the Cathedral from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Road, NW, Atlanta, GA 30305 or to the Midtown Assistance Center, 20 Porter Place NE, Atlanta, GA 30308.
