charles white, iii

October 14, 1930 ~ December 4, 2011

Charlie White was a beloved father, grandfather, cousin and dear friend to many. He was born in Gastonia, NC on October 14, 1930 and passed away on December 4, 2011. Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Sarah Mason White and Charles Whitfield White, Jr. as well as his sister, Sallie Ingram White. Growing up, Charlie worked for his mother in her antique shop in Gastonia. After graduation from high school, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was stationed in LA Rochelle, France. After his time in the Army, he attended Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, NC and then moved to Orlando, FL where he was in wall and floor covering sales. In Orlando, Charlie met an Atlanta girl whom he married in 1962 at which time they relocated to Atlanta, GA. He was married to Gail Chitwood White for 15 years after which they divorced and he became a single father to their two daughters. He was a remarkable father. He always raised his girls to “do the right thing”. He wasn’t always sure how they should accomplish this, but felt it was the only way to live according to God’s plan. Charlie is survived by his two daughters and their families — Sarah White Hendrick, her husband Derek and their son, Samuel Kenneth; Cindi White Halupke, her husband Scott and their children, Charles Scott, Mitchell Walter and Caroline Gail. He is also survived by several cousins and many dear friends of all ages. Charlie was and thanks to his wonderful friends, will always be the “official” Mayor of the Men’s Grill at Ansley Golf Club where he was a member for 41 years and served on the Board of Directors and many committees. His friends were as important to him as his family. Charlie was also a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church for 49 years where he was actively involved for many of those years. Funeral services will be held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any of the following charities: Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, Atlanta, GA, The Boy Scouts of America, Atlanta Area Council, Milton District or Dutchess County SPCA, Hyde Park, NY.
