Betty Maxine Crane Davis of Atlanta, beloved wife and mother, passed away on May 13, 2010 at home after a short illness. She was born Sept. 25, 1928, daughter of Maxine Dobbs Crane and James Ross Crane. She grew up in Athens Georgia and attended Sullins College. She graduated from University of Georgia in 1951 where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. She married Frank Etheridge Davis Junior on October 19, 1951.
Betty was a member of Northside United Methodist Church and the Northside Bible Class. She also was a lifetime volunteer with the Shephard Center. She cherished her group of 20 closest friends who started a sewing club over 53 years ago that is still going strong. They would meet monthly to sew, socialize and exchange new ideas. She was also a member of the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America and Cherokee Town and Country Club. In addition, they also enjoyed many friends through Frank’s Kiwanis Club which he has been a member of since 1965. She was known for her warmth, attentiveness and compassion towards a wide circle of friends.
Betty is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Frank Etheridge Davis, Jr., her son Dr. Frank Etheridge Davis III and his wife Julia of Savannah, and her daughter, Allison Lee Davis Berkowitz and her husband Dr. Gerald Phillip Berkowitz of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Douglas Cameron Hanton, Blaine Elizabeth Hanton, , Devin Delaney Hanton, Casey McLean Hanton, Brennan Craig Hanton, and Madeline Grace Davis, all of Savannah GA and Joshua Michael Berkowitz of Japan, Jacob Franklin Berkowitz of Mississippi, Cathrine Lellie Berkowitz, Martin Ross Berkowitz, and Cameron Lee Berkowitz, all of Charlotte NC. She was preceded in death by her brother James Ross Crane Jr., of Greenville, SC.
The family will receive friends on Sat. May 15th from 6-8pm at Northside United Methodist Church. A Memorial Service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held at 3pm on Sunday May 16th at Northside United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may send donations to Northside United Methodist Church, 2799 Northside Drive, Atlanta, Ga., 30305.
