Anna Ruth Backer Mangold died in Atlanta, GA Thursday, October 18 at age 97.
Ms. Mangold was born February 2, 1915 in Cairo, IL, where she spent her early years before moving to Chester, IL, with her family. She graduated from Chester High School in 1933, and was employed by Prim Hosiery, Inc., where she met and married Harry C. Mangold in July, 1937.
They moved to Columbus, GA, in 1956 where they lived until being transferred to Humboldt, TN, in 1961. After Mr. Mangold’s death in 1985, she moved to Atlanta to be near her two sons and their families.
She enjoyed an active lifestyle including golf, bridge, and a large group of friends, was active in various political campaigns, and was always quite active in her local Catholic church.
She is survived by her two sons, Neal Richard Mangold and Terry David Mangold, both of Atlanta; two brothers, Paul Eugene Backer of Austin, TX, and Robert Lee Backer of St. Louis, MO; was pre-deceased by one brother, Harry George Backer of Sun City, AZ. She celebrated six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle in Smyrna, GA, at 10:30AM on Monday, October 22 and her cremains will eventually be interred at Rose Hill Cemetery in Humboldt, TN.
