Martha Stephens Hollings was born July 27, 1938 in Lumpkin, GA where she spent her childhood. The oldest of three girls, she grew up playing hymns on the piano at the United Methodist Church. She went on the play for events all over GA, and music was a life-long hobby. She loved attending Auburn University, where she served as president of ADPi sorority and graduated in 1959 with a degree in Education. She married John “Jack” R. Stephens in 1960, and in 1963 had the first of their three daughters, Sherry, Marilena, and Laura Louise.

Martha was a grand Southern lady described by many as a true “steel magnolia.” She was an avid reader, a master gardener, a music lover, and a world traveller. Naturally social, Martha made friends everywhere she went. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and many groups, including The Ivy Garden Club, numerous book clubs, and above all, her Tuesday Bridge Club.

Martha’s beautiful smile, her kindness, and her generosity will be remembered by everyone who knew her. Her Southern accent was immediately recognizable. She is survived by daughters Sherry S.White, Marilena R. Stephens, and Laura Louise Perkinson, sisters Marian Lowry and Sally Westerlund, and grandchildren Elizabeth, James, Hannah Louise, and Wills.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 on Friday November 30th at Trinity Presbyterian Church, reception following at Trinity. Donations can be sent to American Cancer Society
